John Ware - History

I HAVEN’T LISTENED TO THIS MATERIAL
IN MANY CASES
FOR MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS.
THOSE I’VE CHOSEN ARE PIECES
THAT GOT MY ATTENTION,
LIKE IT WAS A FIRST HEARING
OF WORK BY SOMEONE ELSE.
IT’S SELF INDULGENT THEN,
BUT IT’S MY WEB SITE.
IT’S EASY TO FORGET I THINK
HOW MUCH INTELLECTUAL ENERGY
I POURED INTO THE KIND OF PLAYING
EMMYLOU’S MUSIC CALLED FOR.
BA GAVE US SO MUCH SPACE
TO CREATE SPACE.
I PLAYED CARDBOARD BOX
AND ONE BRUSH/ONE STICK
AND TOWEL COVERED SNARE
AND MANY MANY DETUNED DRUMS
ALL TO PAINT A PICTURE
WITH TEXTURE AND NOISE,
THAT WAS
SOMETIMES BARELY AUDIBLE.
AND THEN THERE WERE THE
BLUEGRASS ROCK’N’ROLL
ADVENTURES
FLYING AS LOOSE AS POSSIBLE
RELYING ON EMORY,
PERHAPS THE FINEST MUSICIAN I’VE EVER KNOWN,
TO REMIND ME WHERE ON EARTH WE WERE.
RATHER THAN MUSCLE
IT’S OFTEN WHISPERS
THAT PROVIDE THE POWER
OF THIS MUSIC.

NEZ IS A VERY ODD DIRECTOR.
HE’S IN CONTROL BY MAKING YOU THINK
YOU’RE IN CONTROL.
WE RECORDED AT RCA IN HOLLYWOOD
WITH PETE ABBOT AT THE BOARD.
WHEN A CHANNEL DIDN’T WORK
HE’D HAUL IT OUT OF THE RACK
AND DROP IT ON THE FLOOR.
HE CALLED THE MOVE
RCA-ING THE EQUIPMENT.
THAT ALMOST ALWAYS WORKED.
THE STUDIO WAS FILLED
WITH DRUMS AND GIMMICS
OF ALL TRIBAL ORIGINS.
WHEN SOMETHING WAS NEEDED
NEZ WOULD SAY “PLAY THAT!”
POINTING TO A BOOBAM
OR A FLIM FLAM
AND I’D PLAY IT.
IT WAS WEIRD, BUT IT WORKED.
MAGNETIC SOUTH WAS MADE
IN ABOUT TEN DAYS
OR
THIRTY CASES OF BUSCH.
I CAN’T REMEMBER WHICH.
WE STARTED THE FNB IN 1969.
I THINK THE MUSIC HOLDS UP WELL.
THERE’S A CERTAIN GRACE
TO THE RECKLESSNESS.

I’VE INCLUDED THE HOT BAND TRACKS
FROM JONATHAN EDWARDS AND
ROSANNE AND RODNEY ALBUMS
FOR TWO REASONS:
I LIKE THEM
AND
THEY ARE THE SAME PLAYERS
UNDER QUITE DIFFERENT HANDS.
BRIAN AHERN AND RODNEY CROWELL
MANIPULATE PEOPLE
AND TALENT.
THAT’S THE JOB.
THE PRODUCT IS PERSONAL.

FINALLY
THERE ARE THE SONGS BY
THE CLAREMONT COLLEGE BOYS.
CHRIS DARROW PRODUCED THE TRACKS
USING THE USUAL SUSPECTS FROM THE VILLAGE.
IN THIS CASE IT WAS TWO EVENINGS
IN 1970 WITH BERNIE LEADON, DAVID LINDLEY
JOHN LONDON AND ME.
IT’S LOOSE AS A LIVING ROOM
AND QUITE CHARMING.
